The Blue Electronic Ink currently developed by Zikon Inc. is based on a reverse emulsion. A reverse emulsion consists of droplets of a polar liquid that are dispersed in a non-polar liquid or continuous phase. The polar droplets are loaded with a blue dye and stabilized by a combination of surfactants in a well defined ratio. By providing energy to the system, the polar droplets self-assemble in the non-polar liquid.
The manufacturing of REED Ink is a very simple process that requires no sophisticated or expensive equipment. Equipment and facilities costs can easily be kept to a minimum. A standard chemistry laboratory fitted with a regular fume hood and basic general chemistry instrumentation will suffice to support product development and manufacturing. All components needed to produce the Ink are readily available (in bulk quantities) through numerous specialty chemical companies.
New product development will focus on color displays. The three Inks will be combined in three layers to generate a color display.
